About this project

Welcome to the WordNet Editor – a specialized graphical interface designed to streamline and simplify the process of editing and managing WordNet databases. The tool is tailored for linguists, lexicographers, and language enthusiasts who seek an intuitive and efficient way to update and maintain WordNet structures.

Disclaimer

By choosing to use this software, users acknowledge and accept the inherent risks associated with data handling and software performance, including but not limited to the potential for data loss, data corruption, or failure of the software to perform as expected. While every effort is made to ensure the reliability and security of the software, we cannot guarantee that these issues will never occur. For those seeking the highest level of performance, security, and control over their data, it is strongly recommended to host the software on their own servers or infrastructure. This approach allows users to tailor the software environment to their specific needs and provides the opportunity to implement additional safeguards and backup strategies. Users who opt to use the software in its provided form, without opting for self-hosting, do so at their own risk and agree not to hold the software developers or distributors liable for any associated losses or damages.

How to contribute

There are two ways to contribute. The first way is to contribute to WordNets by using this application to edit, enhance or validate a certain one. The second way is to contribute by interacting with the Code-Repository (Create Issues, Enhance Code, ..) In the following sections these possibilities will be discussed.

About WordNets

WordNets are lexical resources that relate words to each other. They are used to capture the meaning and semantic relationships between words. The organizational structure of a WordNet is crucial for its use.

Lexical Entries

Lexical entries refer to the individual words or phrases that are included in a WordNet. Each lexical entry is associated with one or more synsets, depending on the different meanings the word may have. This structure allows for the precise mapping of words to their meanings and their semantic relationships with other words.

Synsets

Synsets (Synonym Sets): The basic building blocks of a WordNet are synsets, groups of words that are interchangeable because they share a common meaning. For example, "car" and "vehicle" might be part of the same synset.

Semantic Relations

1. Hypernyms and Hyponyms: The hierarchy within a WordNet is represented by hypernyms (superordinate terms) and hyponyms (subordinate terms). For example, "vehicle" is a hypernym of "car", while "car" is a hyponym of "vehicle".

2. Meronyms: Meronyms are parts of a whole. Considering "wheels" as a meronym for "car" illustrates the relationship between a part and the whole within the WordNet.

3. Antonyms: Antonyms are words with opposite meanings. Within a WordNet, words like "bright" and "dark" can be organized as antonyms.

4. And many more! The prototype currently supports the following relations: 'holonym', 'meronym', 'hypernym', 'hyponym', 'antonym'

Import WordNet

To import WordNets there is a detailed script in WordNet-Editor-Utils. Basically you need to transform your XML file into a database file.

Export WordNet

To export a certain WordNet to a proper XML file you have to firstly download the database file. You can do that within this application with the download button.

Than visit WordNet-Editor-Utils and download the corresponding script. With the script you can transform the database file in a proper XMl file.

FAQ

  • Further information and resources regarding WordNets can be found here.
  • How to find the right ILI? You can use the Open English Wordnet. If you search for a Lemma and want the related ILI, you must press on "OPTIONS" and select "Show Synset Identifier".
